Power tools are more commonly used in todays industries, and the vast majority of home owners own a power tool of some sort. These tools need to be properly maintained in order to ensure safety standards are met in conjunction with the use of the power tools. Certain precautions need to be taken into consideration when working with such high performance tools.
Safety Equipment
Before using any type of power tool be sure that you are wearing the correct safety equipment for the job at hand. Also make sure that your work area is safe, clean, dry, and free from any clutter. Be sure to check electrical outlets for dampness, and wiring problems. Make sure all cords connected to the power equipment don't have any kinks, or slashes in them.
Secure your tools
If you are working with power tools in high area, such as scaffolding, always place the tools on a flat surface. You can buy special bins that can be secured to a flat surface to put your power tool in while not in use. Heavy tools can be dangerous if there is a risk that they are not secure, they may fall off high places injuring bystanders.
Protective Gear
Goggles, ear plugs, masks, and other safety equipment should be worn when working with power tools. Eye protection is very important, especially when working with metal and wood. Wear good solid footwear, no open-toed, or flimsy footwear should be worn. Loose fitting clothing is also a potential hazard when using such tools.
Obtain Information
Ask when you buy the tool for as much information on the product as you can get. Before each use always check every part of the tool to be sure they all look usable, and in working order. Check that all safety devices, guards, automatic brakes, and all other safety features are functioning correctly. Proper training on the use of the tool should be undertaken before using these types of tools. Never try to repair faulty tools unless you have had adequate training in this field.
Check List
Read the owners manual of any power tool you purchase. Do not use power tools for jobs they were not intended to do. Ensure that the correct attachments are used with the correct tool to prevent accidents. Wherever you are using power tools you should be sure to have, a first aid kit, a list of emergency phone numbers, and a phone in the area of work. A fire extinguisher and smoke alarm should be installed near the area where you are using the power tools.
Power tools are an ingenious invention, but can be dangerous if safety aspects are not considered. You can be safe when working with power tools if you are sensible, read all guidelines, ask manufacturers for advice, and practice safety rules at all times.
