No matter how skilled you may be at using power tools for your home projects, they are still potentially dangerous electrical equipment capable of causing fatal injury if improperly handled and must be used cautiously and safely. Hundreds of injuries involving power tools result every year, from cuts and impaled objects, to electrocutions, amputations and even death simply because basic safety measures were not followed.
To use your power tool safely remember to:
*Read the directions carefully. Never operate a power tool without appropriate safety preparation first. Ensure that you have thoroughly read the instruction manual or have received training prior to operation. Consult a professional for correct use if necessary. Learning to use a power tool should never be through trial and error.
*Use the correct power tool for the project you need to complete and don't experiment with the tool by trying to use it for a purpose different from its intended one.
*Examine the tool and the power outlet first. If the power socket or the tool itself is damaged in any way or does not meet the manufacturer's specifications, do not use it. If during use, the power tool seems faulty, turn it off.
*Work in an area free of distractions. Clear your workspace of hazards and keep it neat and tidy. Sharp, loose objects or debris, like sawdust, wood shavings, glass or nails on your workbench can easily interfere with the safe operation of the power device and end up slicing skin or igniting into a fire.
*Do not operate equipment in any environment that contains flammable liquids which could burst into flames with a few sparks.
*Make sure the power tool's cord is not knotted and that its path is also free from clutter. When turning the tool off, make sure to pull the plug, not the cord.
*Keep a First Aid kit nearby. As a safety precaution, make sure you have basic first aid essentials nearby, in case you do have an accident.
*Wear appropriate gear. The use of safety gear is a must. Never exposure too much skin and wear long shirts and long pants in heavy fabrics. Tie back hair and remove jewellery that could get caught in moving objects. Remember to wear steel-toe boots and a mask with a face shield. Do not use gloves with most equipment, unless instructions specify.
*Work only in a dry environment. Never work in a damp or wet area. Ensure that the equipment and electrical sockets are dry before switching on any power tool.
*Know the safety features, guards, and locks of your tool prior to use. When changing blades or performing maintenance, ensure that the tool is switched off, unplugged, and safety features are in place. If you are unsure, consult a professional before performing any maintenance.
*Store power tools and accessories unplugged and disassembled when not in use. Safe guard them in a dry and clean tool box. Follow manufacturers' care and cleaning instructions carefully and do not use flammable solvents to clean the tool or accessories.
*Lastly, keep out of reach of children. Keep your tool box locked and far away from youngsters.
