Reflections: Being a veteran in today's society

by Larry Rahn

Created on: December 19, 2008

Our country's veterans are special people, men and women both. They deserve to be recognized as people that served our country on their own accord, most probably because they love their country. Sure you have some out there that wanted the money incentives offered and the education benefits that our government had offered. It's a proven fact in today's world that everyone has an angle. The USA is the best in the world, sure we have our pitfalls such as we are going through now on Wall Street and the auto industry, but, as a whole we are the best. Many veterans have served this great country for that reason and because they wanted to stay the best.

Viet Nam vets were scorned, spit on, discriminated against, called baby killers, drug addicts and on and on. Let me inform you non-service society people of something.Drugs are more rampant in the service now than they ever were. There are thousands of women and children killed in every war our government has gotten us into all through out history. Several acquaintances served in Viet Nam and did what they were told to do by our leaders. The conditions over there were deplorable as they are also in the desert, cold in Korea, rain, mud and jungle in Viet Nam. War is never meant to be a visit to a erotic foreign place. We always do what we are told and that it is for the betterment of our country or whatever country we are in.Nobody wanted to fight in Viet Nam, it was a senseless war as we all know, Iraq is much the same, we get involved in wars we shouldn't and lose members of our families or they come back maimed or totally disabled.

One thing I have noticed the last few years though, troops returning home now are given a heroes welcome, and the sad thing is the same people here in the U.S. spit on the troops returning from Viet Nam, called them names and treated them like a bad disease in society. I know times have changed and so have the peoples attitudes. Being a veteran myself I feel treatment for all vets should be the same in this country. I guarantee you there are thousands and maybe even millions here at home that you won't see volunteering to protect this country, money sways them, crime, parents, education, and other things. Hell, you can make a lot of money on the street corner selling drugs right here at home or smuggling in illegals even. Why take that chance of getting wounded or even killed in some foreign country? If I were younger I would serve again, this country is worth saving regardless of the shape it is in today because of our government and all the corrupt politicians, and swindlers. There are very good people out there and most of them have served this country faithfully in their youth. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
