Poetry: Years go by

Don't Grow Up So Fast

It seems like only yesterday

They laid you in my arms

And silently I made a vow

To keep you safe from harm

I don't know where the years have gone

They flew so quickly past

My darling, little, baby boy

Please, don't grow up so fast

It wasn't long, I watched you go

Aboard that yellow bus

Spending, now, so many hours

So far away from us

Too soon your teenage years were here

And friends claimed all your time

I prayed that God would keep you safe

Away from drugs and crime

And, when I blinked, more time was gone

I heard your wedding vow

You took her hand and walked away

Belonging to her now

And, now you give to me a joy

That cannot be surpassed

I whisper to your baby boy

"Please, don't grow up so fast!"
