A Walk in the Park

Scene: Andrew and Melanie are walking through the park at11:00 A.M. on a snowy Christmas morning.

Andrew: Did you have a good time this morning?

Melanie: That was a lot of fun. Since it was always just me and my folks, Christmas morning wasn't a big party like it is at your house. This morning was pretty wild.

Andrew: Are you glad you came?

Melanie: Of course! Thank you so much for bringing me! (smiles coyly) But I would have gone anywhere to spend Christmas with my honey.

Andrew: (laughs) I'm glad.

Andrew stops to make a snowball and throw it at a tree.

Andrew: Did you like your gift?

Melanie: Every girl likes a new pair of Jimmy Choo's. And they're sooo cute! Who helped you pick them out?

Andrew: (feigns indignation) Who helped me? I'm deeply offended! You don't think I can pick out a pair of shoes by myself? (pauses) My sisterbut it was my idea.

Melanie: Well, I will have to thank her when we get back to the house. No offense, sweetheart, but you can't pick out your own shoes by yourself.

They walk in silence for a few seconds.

Melanie: You know, Kate and Shonda were convinced that my Christmas present would be an engagement ring.

Andrew: Did they convince you?

Melanie: Not quite, but they made a pretty good case. You inviting me to your parents' house for Christmas and all. it seemed like you might be setting up a proposal.

Andrew: I told you, Mel, a guy has to be ready and able to support his family before he starts one. I love you, and I want to marry you. I just need to get my finances in order.

Melanie: And I've told you, I don't care about that. I just want to be together. It's been 4 years. How much longer will it take to get ready?

Andrew stops and turns to her.

Andrew: I'll tell you what. I'll propose before your next birthday. How about that?

Melanie: That's 8 months away!

Andrew: I said "before", not "on". I want it to be a surprise. I wouldn't have proposed this morning anyway, because you would have seen it coming a mile away.

Melanie: OKI'll take it. Before my next birthday. The countdown has begun.

They resume walking.

Andrew: I've always loved this park.

Melanie: It's beautiful.

Andrew points out the ice skaters on a frozen pond. Melanie watches for a few seconds, then turns back to Andrew, only to find that he is not there. She turns around and sees him on one knee holding out a diamond ring.

Andrew: I've always loved this park. It's a wonderful place to tell you that I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you.

Melanie: (through tears) Yesyes, it is.a really wonderful place.
