Public Death Records
Are you thinking of starting your own family tree? Geneology is something that so many people find interesting, and conduct searches to find out who their ancestors are everyday. Why not try it out for yourself? You never know, you may just be related to royalty somewhere along the line!
If you are thinking of taking this up as a hobby, then public death records may prove helpful for you. Knowing when people were born and died is essential in constructing your own family tree, and it is actually very simple to get the information needed for this. Certified death certificates have been kept as records and made available to the general public since around 1919. You will find that these records that go back that far can help you to determine who and where your ancestors were, when they died and from what. This can prove particulary useful if you are looking up family medical history. It may help to know if there were generations of twins in your family and if they follow a pattern as such. Maybe heart disease was a major factor in yur families health problems. Public death records cna help you to determine at what age your family members were dying, and although it may seem slightly morbid, can help you to work out if you are at a risk of going the same way. If every woman in your family tree had breast cancer, for example, then you can take preventative measures and ensure you go for the necessary check ups to ensure that it doesn't happen to you.
Maybe you had a relative that you hadn't seen for many years. Public death records will help you if a search for your long lost relative on the internet has proved fruitless. Many death certificates can tell you where the body was buried or if they were cremated, giving you a chance to pay your last respects or jsut to see where they are. With the increase of family fueds in todays society, they aren't as close knit as they may have been once upon a time, and it is very often the case that children haven't met their biological parent or parents and further family members of older generations. Knowing that you can pay your final respects can help a person put aside any guilt they may feel for not visiting the family member sooner, and public death records can help to find where and when they died and were buried or cremated.
Generally, the public death records can be obtained from authorities such as the Department of Health. There is a fee involved to obtain records such as these, but it varies from around thirty to fifty dollars as a general rule. The death certificate is considered as confidential and therefore only certain people can have access to them. Immediate family members can get hold of them, as can legal representatives like attorneys and also guardians. Identity is needed to prove that you are in fact, a person with a legal right to access these records, and once that has been proven, you will have the public death record and be able to go on your way.
For whatever reason you want to get hold of a death certificate, it is fairly easily come by, and all it takes is a little trip to the correct authorities and once you have proven who you are, you should be able to walk away with a copy of it with no real problems.
