Video game degrees in themselves are absolutely worthless. There is a common misconception about video game degrees.
Even though there are some schools that have video game degrees, they do nothing to get you into the video game industry. You do not need a video game degree to be a beta tester for numerous video game titles.
While video games are starting to be taken more seriously, it shows that a degree in video games will not get you into the video game industry. The same can be said for a degree in film. A degree in film does not necessarily mean you are going to get into the film industry.
With that said, a video game degree will not really get you far into the game industry. Overall, what is really in a video game degree?
Not much detail or specifics were given out in regards to it. What type of courses would you take in order to get that video game degree? There are many different ways to get into film without having a degree in film. There are many different ways to get into video games without having a degree in video games. Today, making video games would be similar to making film.
However, there are a lot more details and specifics needed in regards to creating a game. I do see that there are many aspects important to video game creation that would not be covered in course on video games.
There is the programming and encoded. You are going to need a team of programmers and coders to come up with the game's programming. For graphics and game-play engines, that same team needs to come up with the programming for it. You probably will not have that training in a video game degree. You have to go into computer science in order to do the programming. Programming is one of the major aspects of creating a video game.
There is the art concept of the game. Before you do the actual digital graphics, you have to come up with concept art.
Video game degrees do not teach that.
You will need a team of concept artists to draw out locations and the environment. You will need a team of concept artists to draw out your characters.
You will not learn that stuff with a video game degree. You would need to take actual art courses to learn that stuff.
There is the digital graphics and design of the game. You have to major in graphic design and illustration in which you learn how to use various programs. They probably do not teach that in video game degree courses. That is another reason that you probably will not get far with a "video game degree."
