Poetry: Until I die

by Steve Marshall

Created on: December 19, 2008

The old man who died young at heart with a false start to depart.

Live until you Die

Old Josh opened wider his weary tired old blue eyes.
With nary a final sigh of goodbye to let fly.
He could still open his eyes in surprise.
When love came in disguise only to prod and to prise.

Love once more visited him to bring him a tear so clear.
Despite his fears of dying still coming ever so near.

Old Josh feared dying now, but he loved living much more.
Personified in his trying to explore life's living while still on shore.

The old man was soon to die without him ever really knowing it.
That's still part of his true living, while still going on giving.
Soon to wish us all a goodbye on a high and a raised note.
Playing his fiddle like life's still a riddle while afloat in his moat.

A long life of pain and of sheer hard heavy work.
He had never stopped working, or shirked work for a perk.
Working until dying while dying to work like he's often berserk.
Josh was always himself with only a hint of a lurk of a smirk.

The old man was not yet ready to die or to lie down stone dead.
Not ever never ready to say goodbye to his new found lost love.
Yet he was not too all broken up inside to hide his aged head instead.
Still wanting to try to appear calm to his wife on whom now he relied.

He had allowed his old heart to give him a new start and a new part.
For the few minutes now remaining left of his long lasting life.
Living only for sheer joy now he fathered a new baby boy so smart.
Now though he's in terrible sad strife with the family of his late last wife.

The old man was not really too old still to be bold in the cold to take hold.
At only ninety three short years of age this could never have been foretold.
Still so young in his heart a new life he had now begun and started.
A new course for a new life he had charted and while yet not departed.

He had fathered a boy. Oh what a joy with his Helen of Troy.
To employ his new toy and to enjoy and decoy. What was it to be?
Alas the old man turned over & died right now by her side, at last free.
Flowering in late life only to annoy and destroy, as she cried & denied.

Life is never over and till it's all quiet really really all over.
Life must then be all fully put right aside to subside in its tide.
The old man had lived fully until he lived even as he had died.
Even now as he still lied by her side a tear left his cheek & he cried.

The old man had died in the way he had fully lived.
With his new bride not denied, my how he had tried.
Living only to die but dying to give his new life an old ride.
With renewed pride for a short stride and now a long slide.

An old man can still be young at heart when he dies as he cries.
If he has love with its supplies on the rise like old Josh, I surmise.
Old Josh completed his life based on one that was all only loving.
Leaving others to sensationalise over whatever came out in the wash.

Dying is not so much relying on life as it relies on itself to be more.
Everything really rests on love from above to reprise and reward.
Enough love to shove an old whole soul past heaven's great heavy door.
Love only masking as death with its loving disguise in its sword.
