Poetry: Heartbreak

My Angel

When you were born I knew you were an Angel,
sent from God. Your soul filled my heart
and it was as strong as steel.
Nothing could break it not even death.
I know I promised not to cry.
But darling, I long for your smile,
just for an instant to hear your words of love.
I feel like glass about to shatter.
My blood has no place to run.
There is nowhere I can hide.

At first I did try to hide,
because they had come and taken my Angel.
They came boldly to my door and broke my heart.
It was like they rammed through me a piece of steel
when they spoke to me of your death.
I know everyone for miles heard my cry.
Please forgive me for that day, I lost my smile.
It was a day of darkness, there was no love.
I knew I was about to shatter.
There was no place to run.

I can't read your letter the ink has run,
from the many tears that I tried to hide
from your Father, but I keep it my Angel
because I know the words are etched in my heart.
When others speak of the war my eyes turn hard as steel,
and I tell them that it is nothing but death
to our sons and daughters. "Make them stop" I cry.
They look at me, shake their heads and smile.
Come Mother they say, remember his love.
A love of duty that didn't shatter.

It is the makers of War that I wish to shatter,
into a thousand pieces. Those men who run
our country, and then try to hide
behind love of country and state. You my Angel
they didn't know and so stabbed me in my heart
with a sword of hardest steel.
They couldn't care less about your death.
So long as you followed their battle cry,
It is the victory that makes them smile.
And money is their true love.

They care nothing about a Mother's love.
If there was a way to wipe off that smile,
A way to make their world shatter,
I would do it. I would make them run
and would laugh as they tried to hide.
I know I shouldn't feel this way my Angel,
but they took from me my heart
and left in its place a piece of steel,
that will be with me I'm afraid, until my death.
Its heaviness is what makes me cry.

I promise you after today I'll try not to cry.
For you hated sadness, you embraced love.
I'll remember the joy you gave me and smile,
with the memories of you that shatter.
Memories of your childhood will not be able to hide
in the shadows again my Angel.
I'll let them fill my heart,
with a love as strong as the steel
box we are placing you in. Love doesn't end with death.

I will not let your death
be in vain. The people are going to hear my cry,
and will know you and your love
for this county. I will tell how you left with a smile,
because you believed that you could shatter
the terror of this world and make it run
and try to hide.
They will hear how my Angel,
with his very big heart
could be as tough as steel.

Like a strong piece of steel,
you left without fearing death.
Asking me not to cry,
Reminding me of your love
walking out the door with a smile.
Your belief did not shatter,
They could not make you run.
For your country you would not hide
from a duty that would take my Angel
and crush my heart.

You were all heart
even if made of steel.
And I miss much in your death
Then I hear a child's cry.
It's your son, whom I love,
slamming the screen door with a smile.
His faith in you they did not shatter
and like his Father he will not run,
for you, through his eyes cannot hide.
And I know that you will be his Guardian Angel.
