New movies you really should see

So I've written several top ten movie articles on Helium. I'm going to dedicate this article to the Top Ten New Movies you really should see. My definition of new movies is going to be movies that have not been released on DVD and I have personally seen them. That's it, those are my criteria for this article. So let's begin, shall we (in no particular order):

1) Pan's Labyrinth - Holy Smokes! This movie was so good. I saw it last weekend in Madison Connecticut. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, this movie will take you on a fantastical journey in war torn Spain during the Second World War. Ivana Baquero gives a decent performance and the special effects are amazing. One waring though, this movie is not for children.

2) Rocky Balboa - I know what your thinking... Is he for real. YES! I am. This movie brings back the nostalgia of the original Rocky. Stallone gives a rousing performance and brings back the Rocky we all know and love. This movie is a tad slow but overall I thought it was entertaining, I mean that's why we go to the movies, right?

3) Apocalypto - Mel Gibson may be an idiot in his personal life but he shows us why he's a superstar in his professional life. No name actors, beautiful scenery, Mayan dialect, and so many other things bring about a great film. This film is a tad grotesque if you have a weak stomach but well worth the watch.

4) Babel - Brad Pitt is a great actor, period. This movie is a hidden gem and well done production wise. I couldn't find the Japanese girl's name in the movie but she really adds another element playing such a small role.

5) The Departed - Perhaps Martin Scorsese's greatest work. This movie is a masterpiece from beginning to end. A superb cast with Scorsese's golden boy leading the bunch. If Scorsese doesn't win the Oscar for this, I'll be floored... and disappointed.

6) Flags of our Fathers - Clint Eastwood (Oscar darling) directed this adaptation of a book. Gritty and harrowing this movie tells the tale of the horrors of Iwo Jima. Not to be missed is the sister movie Letters from Iwo Jima already a Golden Globe winner for best foreign movie. The two movies effectively give variations of the battle for that small island based on Japanese and American accounts.

7) The Protector - Tony Jaa is the new international action hero. This guy is a mix of Jet Li and Jackie Chan with a little Donnie Yen thrown in for good luck. Amazing stunts. And it's from Thailand, officially the second Thai movie I've seen after Tony Jaa's Ong-Bak.

8) The Science of Sleep - Cute movie about misplaced individuals finding each other. A date movie, though I saw it myself, weird...

9) Perfume: The story of a Murder - OK this one's weird about a old world perfumist who becomes a serial killer. Excellent editing tells this story. Very imaginative visuals. A quirky pick.

10) The Marine, Guardian, Van Wilder 2, etc... - Watch any of these flicks to see why movies cost $10 per ticket. If crap movies like these keep getting green lighted and no one watches them then companies pass the loss onto us... Or something like that. I just hate crappy movies.

OK here's my disclaimer: I couldn't possibly have seen every movie out there so sorry if I missed one or two of your top ten.

Honorable Mention - If you made it this far in the article go watch Casino Royale. I'm not a Bond fan at all but I did enjoy this movie...
