A Surprise In The Blizzard - Drama

Mike and Deanna pull the lacy curtain back to look out at the first flakes of snow scattering their front lawn. Mike has just finished his last day of work before the holidays, but neither are happy. They are both thinking the same thing....... this will be their fifteenth Christmas without a longed-for baby in their home........

The phone rings:

Deanna

"The fertility clinic! It has to be ....... but I just can't get it. Pick up? Please?"

Mike

"Fingers crossed, Sweetheart - this might be it!

Hello?"

Deanna

"I knew it - it IS Dr Winter's office, I can tell by your face."

Mike

"Shh-hh ..... Thank-you Dr Winter..... no ..... no ..... that's quite alright ..... I understand."

Deanna

"Don't even say it! It didn't work did it? If you could see your face ....... and that was our last chance too! My life is over, Christmas is over ...... nothing has any point any more!"

Mike

"Honey, I didn't say it was our last chance - that wasn't what I said."

Deanna

"But that's what you meant - it all means the same thing - no baby this year again, or any year - no family - no proper home - no proper Christmas! I never knew it was possible to feel disappointment as such a physical pain. You just don't understand!"

Mike

"I just said there was no more money after the third try...... that doesn't mean we can't save for next year."

Deanna

"Next year? What next year? We might not have another year - we're getting older all the time - oh, I just can't believe it! It's so unfair."

Mike

"I'm so sorry Honey, but without a miracle, I don't know what we can do. Let me go fetch your Mom for Christmas - if I can get the car out, that is. She'll understand - you need someone like that right now."

Deanna

"Ok - I do want to tell Mom - she won't believe our bad luck again. What's with the snow? Let me see. It can't be that bad!"

Mike

" Oh my God ! The driveway's a foot deep! Where'd that drift come from all of a sudden? Just look at it - it's a whiteout!

Deanna

"Mike - don't go! I'll ring Mom! Don't even go near that car - it's freezing over too. The fishpond's like a sheet of glass. Come away from the curtains and go check the pipes in the basement."

Mike

"Wait - there's someone out there - a young girl - she's struggling."

Deanna

"Looks like she's carrying something - a blanket or something, but it looks heavy. Go get your torch....... she might need help, she's slipping all over the place. I'll get my coat."

Mike

"Ready? I'll just open the door for a second, or we'll be blown off our feet. Even if she just came in for a few minutes, she can wait for the blizzard to blow through so we can walk her to her block."

Deanna

"I'm ready - open the door!"

Mike

"Looks like we took too long, she's gone."

Deanna

"Maybe she tripped and fell?"

Mike

"I'll go look down the block......"

Deanna

"Careful, careful Mike - mind the step, there's something there - Look!

Mike

If I can just kneel down...... without getting blown over...."

Deanna

"It's moving!"

Mike

"Oh my God - it's warm! Here - open it inside - in the dry!"

Deanna

"Let me see! Let me open the blanket!"

Mike

"Pink..... warm....soft - oh my God!

Deanna

"Just look at his beautiful, beautiful face...........
