America the Free and the Cursed
A look at how America has left the blessings of Deuteronomy 28 and is now wallowing in the curses of the chapter due to the abuse of our liberties
Friday the Bureau of Labor Statistics released The Employment Situation Summary for November 2008. To the surprise of some and the affirmation of most the unemployment situation took a dramatic downturn in a single month with the loss of over half a million jobs in the nonfarm sector. This significant loss increased the unemployment rate from 6.5% to 6.7%. All of this is added evidence that a perilous future is at stake for the United States of America.
For many Americans this news is startling but not surprising, just as the official statement Washington gave December 1st telling the public America has been in a recession since December 2007. It seems that the only shocked ones were those on Wall Street judging by how the major indices dropped after the announcement. Logically the signs have been out there with the decreased spending, rising debt, bankruptcies and corporation collapses, and the need for government intervention via monetary bailouts.
For those whose intermingled faith and study are of the Jewish and Christian persuasion, this news goes beyond secular logic. Deuteronomy chapter 28 tells of blessings and curses directly related to the obedience and disobedience of God. This nation has seen the blessings of "our coming in and going out" (Deuteronomy 28:6) and forgot all too quickly where our "trust" lies as we spent those countless dollar bills.
To the nations of the world the United States is a thing of horror (Deuteronomy 28: 25) economically and evidently a country worthy of their ridicule, as seen by the disparaging remarks from Russian, Middle Eastern, and Asian leaders. America has been blamed for the global economic situation, even the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has chimed in stating, "It is not a secret to anybody that in a very real way this problem began in the United States with a completely inadequate regulation of the financial sector," at a Conservative convention in Winnipeg. At home, it appears Americans have no respect for each other (Deuteronomy 28:54) on account of their own greed. This is tragically evident with the trampling death of a Wal-Mart employee on Black Friday 2008 in Long Island. To add more fuel to the fire shoppers were outraged when the store closed to investigate and aid others injured during the early
