The Walker Hound dog breed is also known as the treeing walker coonhound. A man named Walker breed the Walker hound with a dog of an unknown breed back in the early 1800's.

~ Physical Appearance ~

The Walker Hound is a medium sized dog. The average male's height varies from 20 to 26 inches and he weighs 50 to 70 pounds. The average female's height is 18 to 24 and the weight is 40 to 60 pounds.

The coat of the Walker Hand is smooth and short and the color of the coat is either bi colored or tri-colored. Although bi-colored Walker Hounds are allowed, tri-colored Hounds are more popular and often preferred. The popular color of the coat is tan and white as opposed to the red coat of the Redbone Coonhound.

 ~ Social Behavior ~

The Walker Hound is a friendly dog and gets along well with people of all ages including children. This breed is also friendly with other dogs and does not get aggressive or overly territorial. The Walker Hound was originally a working dog, hence he is hard working, obedient, loyal and easy to train.

This breed is fast and has good treeing ability and requires exercise to avoid hyperactive behavior. The Walker Hound is intelligent, confident and has a distinctive howl and a good smell of sense and can make a good guard dog if trained.
As a hunting dog they have been known to chase all kinds of small animals and even larger ones such as bob cats up a tree. They are also known to be able to scale a six to eight foot fence!

~ Reproduction ~

The gestation period of this breed is 55 to 65 days and can go as long as 72 days depending on the age and number of the times the female has been bred in the past. The labor period varies from 1 to 24 hours and female Walkers may require help during whelping. Female Walker Hounds can deliver as many as 9 puppies, however majority of female Walker Hounds do not deliver more than seven puppies in one litter.

Not all Walker hounds are created equally. Some are excellent hunters, while others make great herders, some are great trackers and a few can do all three very well.

The Walker hound has an average life span of 12 to 14 years and the only health problem they are known to have is anxiety, but regular exercise and TLC should keep the dog in excellent mental health.
