Drama: Getting your children to shovel the driveway

by jc555444555

Created on: December 18, 2008

Scene on front driveway.

Characters involved: Dad= Jim serelly. Son= Mathew serelly.

Scene: The snow is falling lightly, a sparkling dust of frozen moisture plucked out of the freezing air. Jim Serelly is slowly shoveling the piling snow off of his driveway, his four year old son Mathew playing with a bulldozer at the top of the driveway pushing away small amounts of snow as he makes small beeping noises.

Mathew: Dad, my bulldozer isn't working.

Jim wipes at his heating forehead and turns to look at his son as he leans against his shovel.

Jim: It's working just fine son, your doing a great job.

Mathew looks at his dad, unsure, and pushes his bulldozer with a pout on his face.

Mathew: It's not working.

Jim closes his eyes momentarily, thinking of quick ways to blow the whole fiasco over. He looks down at the large shovel in his hands and a small smile finds his face.

Jim: Mat, if you really don't like your bulldozer, why don't you try mine?

Mathew's eyes brighten.

Mathew: Yes!

Mathew jumps up and takes the shovel from his fathers hands, scraping it haphazardly against the cold cement as he tries to push the snow out of the way, all the while bulldozer beeping noises coming vehemently from his mouth. Jim can only smile at his sons Enthusiasm.

10 YEARS LATER

Jim stands in the doorway, his arms wrapped around himself to shield his body from the cold air swarming through the vacant door way, his son glaring at him from the darkening porch.

Mathew: Dad, you can't be serious.

Mathew stares at his dad hotly, a teenage know-it-all look on his face.

Jim: I am quite serious, this is your punishment and if you don't wish to take it, i can take many more things away from you.

Jim stares back at his son, authoritative, and serious.

Mathew: I can't believe you. This is ridiculous.

Jim: What is ridiculous is me catching you skipping school... A block away from my work.

Mathew's expression relaxes for a second as the error of his ways catches up with him.

Mathew: Fine, this is stupid.

Jim smiles smugly and closes the door on Mathew as his son picks up the snow shovel, taking long grudging steps onto the snow covered drive way.

Next scene: On balcony of Jim Serelly's house, his son shoveling the drive way a few feet beneath him.

Jim steps out onto the balcony and pulls his jacket tighter across his chest as he peers over the edge and catches sight of his 14 year old son shoveling the driveway, an extremely mad expression on his face. A frown crosses Jim's face and he leans against the railing with a sarcastic look on his face.

Jim: You forgetting half of your punishment.

Jim calls loudly, and Mathew stops his shoveling and looks up at his dad with an unbelieving look on his face.

Mathew: You've got to be kidding. I'm shoveling the driveway, you got what you wanted.

Jim shakes his head, and repeats what he said.

Jim: Your forgetting half of your punishment. Now either you listen to me and do as your told, or you can say goodbye to a large portion of your Christmas presents.

Mathew lets out a furious little grunt, and resumes his shoveling. Jims smiles a smug smile as loud bulldozer noises slowly rise up to the balcony from where his son slowly continues his shoveling...with his "bulldozer".
