There's nothing like the pleasant surprise of a kitten, a puppy, or any beloved critter looking up at you with those big, sparkling eyes; just waiting and eager for you to give them all the love in the world. In its mind the pet and you were destined to meet. Such warmth is universal, and no one can deny it but is it a good idea to give a pet as a Christmas present? No.

Unmatched happiness simply overwhelms upon the first meeting. However, over time the novelty of a pet dwindles and you're left with a burdened love of your animal companion. Especially when you intended it as a present for young children. You're left to care for it then it begins to feel as if it's no different than paying your bills you do it because you have to, not because you want to. By that point the pet ends up abandoned in a shelter. Or not so lucky if it ends up being euthanized.

It is just one of the realities of giving a pet for a present, and one that happens all too often. One must always keep in mind that it is not just a pet, but also a member of the family. And we certainly cannot abandon members of our family, simply because they're no fun anymore. They are fun to play with, but they are not toys to simply put away in a box to be forgotten.

The only time a pet would make a great present is if you know that they will be cared for, and that you and your family have been making plans to add a new member; and that there is a full understanding of the responsibilities. A pet is not something to be given as a surprise before you've all had this talk. Especially when the pet is still very, very young. There is no excuse in neglecting the fact that it needs to be trained and socialized. It is a lot like planning to have a baby except a baby grows and eventually learns to do things on its own, and communicate. A pet doesn't work like that; it will always depend on you for its needs.

So please take into consideration what you're getting yourself and your family into before you introduce a new pet. Hundreds, if not, thousands of pets are euthanized everyday because they cannot find a home. Don't add to this problem, pets deserve better than literally having to gamble for their lives. Do not give a pet as a present, unless you are absolutely sure that their needs will be met. A pet will give us their unconditional devotion and love, and so should give them the same in return.
