Drama: Winter vacation

by Rhodora Fitzgerald

Created on: December 18, 2008

Characters: Mom (Amanda), Dad (Jerry), 12-year-old twins (Scott and Steve), their friends, Jimmy and Shawn.

Scene 1: Amanda and Jerry Swintel have decided the family needs a little getaway. They decide there is no better time to go than between Christmas and New Year's, because the boys don't have school. They've let each of their twins invite a friend and the family of four and the two extra children have loaded their things into the family mini-van. They are now about 30 miles down the road to their destination.

Amanda: "Wow, isn't the scenery up here beautiful?" (looking out the windows at the snow covered pines that line the highway)

Scott: "Mom, why won't you tell us where we're going?"

Amanda: "Because we want it to be a surprise."

Scott: "But you wouldn't even let us bring our gameboys along! What fun is that?"

Mom: "I promise you guys will get along just fine without your electronics for a few days."

(whispering from the back seat)

Mom: (stretches her hand out across the back of her seat) "Hand it over Jimmy."

Jimmy: "Aw man, but I didn't know we weren't suppose to bring our gameboys."

Mom: "Well you know it now. Don't worry, I'll give it back when we get home."

Scott: "How much longer before we get there?"

Dad: (glances in the rear view mirror) "Only about another 45 minutes."

Mom: "I hope everyone brought the things I told them to bring."

Jimmy: "We did Mrs. Swintel. I gave the list to my Mom and she helped me pack my things."

Shawn: "Yeah, me too, but I don't know why we need our own pillows and bedding. Don't most motels have them?"

Dad: "We're not going to a motel Shawn."

Scott: "Oh great! Now I'm afraid to find out where we are going!"

Mom: (laughing) "You're going to love it!"

Scene 2: The family mini-van exits the highway, follows a narrow snow covered road and comes to a stop in front of what looks like an abandoned cabin.

Dad: (shutting off the engine) "Here we are!"

Scott: "Here we are where?" (peering out the window)

Steve: "Yeah, this place looks abandoned."

Shawn: "Wow, who lives here?"

Dad: "Nobody lives here. This cabin is for rent, and we have rented it for the next three days and two nights."

(grumble, grumble coming from the back seats)

Scott: "Oh joy! Won't this be fun?" (sarcasm)

Dad: "Oh stop it you guys, and help us unload the van!" (he gets out and lifts the rear gate of the van)

Mom: (unlocking the front door of the cabin and peeking inside) "It looks perfect!"

Steve: (entering the cabin first) "Perfect for what?"

Jimmy: (following behind Steve) "It's
