Years ago I learned the value of storing my treasured Christmas decorations in appropriate containers when an heirloom wreath was vandalized by mice. When I opened the plastic garbage bag containing my beautiful pinecone and nut wreath, I was horrified to discover every nut had been torn open leaving gaping holes all over the wreath.
My habit had been to use plastic bags and cardboard boxes to hold my ornaments, wreaths, and silk flower arrangements. Plastic garbage bags seemed like a good idea at the time, but I learned that they are vulnerable to insect and mice invasions. Mold and moisture can also cause damage when cardboard boxes are stored in damp basements or warm attics.
Time and experience has taught me that the best storage solution for my Christmas treasures is plastic storage boxes. They usually come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and most importantly are easily sealed to keep out unwanted critters, moisture, and dust. I prefer the sturdy Sterilite version with stackable lids and easy grip handles. Plastic storage boxes and storage totes are affordable and available at most local retail stores. If you move frequently, these provide a more permanent and safe storage solution. Be sure to label your storage containers with a permanent marker.
I prefer to keep my collectible ornaments in their original boxes. Ornaments should be lightly dusted and ornament hooks removed to prevent scratching. Place ornaments in a plastic twenty-gallon storage container. These are stackable and sturdy enough to protect ornaments from breaking. Ornaments without a box should be packed in an acid-free ornament box separated by dividers. The Ultimate Christmas Storage shop carries acid-free boxes and archival supplies. Beautiful silk flower arrangements provide a real challenge. To maintain the freshness and beauty of your arrangements, clean off excess dust. Your local florist can provide products and tips to help you preserve your silk flowers. Carefully place your floral arrangement in a slightly taller storage tote. Make sure the lid does not press down on the arrangement. I have found that a storage tote may hold one or two arrangements depending on their size. Silk flower arrangements stay dust-free and remain uncrushed until ready to use the next year.
