Poetry: The gardener

by Ethel Smith

Created on: December 17, 2008   Last Updated: January 13, 2010

Watch him, how he moves,

look at her working away,

both are gardeners at home,

doing other jobs by day.

Our gardens are a special place

where toil is done for fun.

The gardener will have to work

in both the rain and the sun.

It is so satisfying though, to plant

and then watch grow,

flowers, shrubs and vegetables,

all planted row on row.

To feel that barren earth

has come alive through you

and all your little efforts

have made plants grow like new.

Perhaps in everyone of us

a gardener can be found

who wants to make new life come forth

from simple dirty ground.
