Christmas 2008: Ways to have a joyful Christmas while in a recession

Christmas was originally intended to be a Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Carols about this miraculous birth were sung. Simple gifts were exchanged as a symbol of the gift given to mankind in the form of a Savior.

Over time, though, Christmas has become a season in which more emphasis is often put on the parties, food, frantic shopping and extravagant gifts. The real meaning of Christmas has been overshadowed by secular things. Perhaps this year's recession is actually a gift, helping people better remember how to simplify and what Christmas really means.

Below are some ways you can have a joyful Christmas while cutting back on spending during tough economic times.

* Focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

Perhaps it's time to step back and find ways to help you get in the spirit of Christmas. Attending Advent church services is a great way to hear the message about the birth of Christ and to be reminded of what his birth and life mean for you. Through being reminded of His great gift to humanity, you can be greatly moved to do some things differently and to be kinder to your friends and loved ones.

* Simplify.

Sometimes less is more. Instead of focusing too much on how many gifts you are buying or receiving, simplify the whole gift-giving process. Cut back on how much you spend. Consider exchanging presents with fewer family members and friends.

Perhaps you can bake goods or make something to give for your presents instead of spending hundreds of dollars at the mall. Focus on giving small items that have meaning to your loved ones. You may be surprised that these things are far more appreciated than some of the higher-priced items.

* Experience Christmas music.

Christmas music is so joyful and beautiful. This music can be especially soothing during a recession, when stress and anxiety levels are high. You can listen to Christmas music on CDs, or download this music to your iPod.

Many churches offer incredible Christmas musical programs that you could enjoy. If you like to sing, gather a group of friends and sing some carols together. This can provide some wholesome, old-fashioned fun.

* Create some memories.

When with your friends and family, be sure to take some great pictures to capture some memories. Focus on the positive, and try to enjoy one another. Laughter goes a long way, especially during times when people are worried about keeping their jobs or paying their bills. Make up your mind to be happy in the company of others this Christmas and try to lighten their loads.

* Bake some holiday goodies.

Baking Christmas treats is great fun. And, you can share them with your neighbors. This kind gesture is one that will be greatly appreciated, and it is an affordable way to show others you care.

* Give to the needy.

One of the most wonderful ways to celebrate Christmas is to remember to give to those less fortunate. You can always find a way to give, whether it's through donating a few dollars to the person with the Salvation Army bell or working with others to deliver presents to families in need. Giving of your time and resources is an incredible way to experience real inner joy.

* Be thankful.

During tough times, it is key to remember the many things for which you have to be thankful. Staying positive and humble will keep you grounded. Recognizing your many blessings will help you feel and spread joy to others.

In conclusion, Christmas is a wonderful time, and it can be even more special during a time of fear and economic uncertainty. People during a recession are often sobered a bit, and their priorities can be rearranged for the better. During this kind of humbling, people can perhaps be more receptive to the real meaning of Christmas.
