Characters: Daddy (Brian), Mommy (Laurie), and their two daughters 6-year-old Molly and 8-year-old Hannah.
Setting: Mommy is enlisted in the US Army. She has been over seas for almost a year and is not due to finish her tour for another three months. It's Christmas Eve and Dad and the two daughters are struggling with the thought of having Christmas without Mommy this year.
Scene 1: Daddy solemnly places a package beneath the tree and then sits back on the sofa and watches while the girls hang their stockings from the fireplace and put out a plate of cookies for Santa.
Molly: Is that the package that Mommy sent? (pointing to the brown paper package under the tree)
Daddy: Yes, she made me promise that we won't open it until she calls us tomorrow morning.
Hannah: Do we really have to wait?
Daddy: Of course we have to wait. It's important to Mommy.
Molly: She's been gone so long. I wish she could come home now.
Daddy: Me too Sweetheart, but it'll only be a couple of months and we'll have Mommy back home forever.
Hannah: Yay! I can't wait!
Molly: What do you think is in the package?
Daddy: I really don't have a clue.
Hannah: It's not very big.
Daddy: No, but postage is very expensive, so Mommy probably wanted to keep the package small. It's probably just some candy for you girls.
Hannah: I can't wait to open it.
Daddy: We'll open it in the morning.
Molly: I can't wait to talk to Mommy when she calls. I want to tell her that I lost another tooth. (grinning a toothless grin)
Daddy: I'm anxious to talk to her too and I didn't even lose a tooth. (teasingly trying to keep everyone's spirits up)
Daddy: Well, speaking of teeth, let's get our teeth brushed so we can get to bed.
Hannah: Already? It's still early.
Daddy: You need to be in bed before Santa will come, and besides it will make morning come faster.
Hannah: Oh alright. (pouting)
(both girls give a kiss to their mother's picture, which hangs front and center on the Christmas tree, and then head to the bathroom to brush their teeth)
Molly: Good Night Mommy.
Hannah: Good Night Mommy. I love you!
Scene 2:
It's Christmas morning and the girls are up early. Daddy is already waiting on the sofa, sipping his cup of coffee as the girls come bounding down the stairs.
Molly: Did Santa Come? Did Santa come?
Daddy: Well good morning sleepy-heads. (laughing) Looks to me like Santa was here. (pointing toward the tree and stockings)
Molly: Can we open our presents now?
Hannah: Yeah, can we?
Daddy: Of course, it is Christmas
