'Tis the time to spread holiday cheer! With foreclosures and a recession, how can the average person celebrate with foreclosures and a recession tainting the Christmas spirit? From gift giving to holiday parties, there are many uncommon ways to reduce the amount of money you spend.
The holiday party
Every year many families hold holiday parties. Food, drinks, and decorations quickly make a dent in your budget. This year instead of a typical holiday party with spiraled ham and eggnog, try focusing on hors d'oeuvre. Have every guest bring a half dozen of their favorite appetizers. You will end up with a variety of foods that everyone can enjoy.
As for beverages, focus on two or three types of drinks. Items are less expensive if you buy them in bulk. For example, instead of serving eggnog, beer, and wine; serve a specialty holiday punch. Warehouse stores can offer the best deals on alcoholic beverages.
After the menu is finished, now is the time to focus on the decorations. Centerpieces can get very expensive; however, with some fresh cranberries and old vases, you can have a low-cost trendy centerpiece. Fill your old vases half-way with water and add fresh cranberries until the water is level with the brim. When you place the vases next to candles, they offer a festive addition to any table.
To spice up your home with Christmas cheer, find old ribbon from previous years. Tying the ribbon around throw pillows will add color and pizzazz to your living room. If you are still in need for decorations, you can wrap your hanging pictures with Christmas paper and ribbon, making your wall look like the home to many Christmas presents.
The Gift Exchange
Every year people can get carried away when buying gifts for one another. There are many ways to reduce the amount of money you spend without reducing the amount of thought and meaning in your gift.
With digital cameras and printers, anyone can become a photographer. Taking a picture of your loved one or family and placing it in a picture frame can be a great, inexpensive gift. My family is filled with pet lovers. This year, I took several photos of their pets and had them framed. On Christmas morning, I think they will be thrilled opening a picture of their family member. Often times, discount stores offer quality picture frames at good price and many stores have kiosks that will print your photos.
Offering your time is also an inexpensive way to give to your loved ones. My brother loathes washing his car, so I have offered to wash his three times as a Christmas present. Not only do I get to spend time with him, but I am giving him something that he would rather not do. In addition, your family could donate your time to those less fortunate. By volunteering at local charities, not only are you giving back to your community, but spending time with your family.
Remember during these hard economic times, Christmas isn't just a time for gifts and parities; it about spending time with your friends and family, celebrating each other.
