Buying Christmas presents is a lot like the old "Wide World of Sports" introductory. The announcer would talk about sports and describe the two extremes, where some experience the "thrill of victory" and others experience the "agony of defeat." Gifts can be a sensitive business because they can symbolically represent feelings about the relationship. Therefore, here are a few Christmas gift ideas for your girlfriend.

Bling

Jewelry is usually appreciated. You can go with the engagement ring (if you dare), some earrings, a necklace, or bracelets. Of course, knowing the taste of the girlfriend is very important because jewelry can be very expensive. One does not want to acquire pieces of jewelry that the girlfriend is not going to enjoy and wear. Therefore, paying attention to style and talking about desired jewelry is an important process.

Appliances

Nothing says love like a new blender. Or, perhaps a vacuum cleaner would be appropriate. Actually, I'm kidding. People probably want to stay away from the small appliance. I suppose some girlfriends might ask for these sorts of items but "conventional wisdom" suggests that people are not supposed to get mechanical items or appliances for occasions like Christmas.

List or spontaneous?

One thing to keep in mind is the fact that people have different attitudes toward receiving gifts. Some girlfriends would prefer that gifts be purchased from a list that she provides in advance. Other people enjoy being "surprised" on Christmas morning by a gift that was not requested. Again, this is an important distinction to understand, and it behooves the giver to discover the attitude of the girlfriend in this regard.

Making a list, checking it twice

Gift ideas are really specific to the individual. In order to get the right girlfriend gift, people have to pay attention. Too often, people ask for Christmas lists at the last minute or try to remember that one thing the girlfriend mentioned months ago. It may be counterintuitive for some people to be overly organized, but the best way to get the right gift is to maintain a list throughout the year. Every time a girlfriend mentions a desired item, that thing should be written down so that it can be recalled during the Christmas holiday.

Relationships are complicated, and gift giving can represent opportunities for closeness or situations or divisiveness. As with anything else in a serious relationship, success comes from listening and paying attention. If the girlfriend is listened to, the right gift will have a better chance of being purchased.
