"I don't know how to dance, I have two left feet". I answered as my sister and her boyfriend announced they were getting married.I do not like to dance, maybe because I never learned. My soon to be brother-in-law asked me to be his best man, an honor I take with great pride, but dancing, forget it, I don't take pride in that.
It's alright I'm told, my sister will talk one of her friends into teaching me how to dance.I ask if there's anything I can do to get out of dancing, but no such luck, face it this boy has no rhythm.Tell jokes, do handstands, sing, but I can't dance. My sister tells me if I don't learn, she will never forgive me, at least try it, if it doesn't work out we'll find something I'm really good at.
I have lots of time to learn to dance, my sister is not getting married for at least six months, so her friend Dawn has voluteered to teach me, she wasn't bribed? No, she is a very good dancer and she can teach anyone, even me, lots of luck!
We begin with some simple steps, mainly tapping of the feet, to find the rhythm, that's easy.Taking my hands in hers, we sway back and forth, hey this ain't so bad. If this is all we do I'd be happy. No such luck, as I 'm about to find out, one hand now is on her waist while the other is still holding her hand.Left foot, then right foot, now do it again.Maybe I should have learnt how to dance sooner.I still haven't stepped on Dawn's feet, so I must be doing everything right.
"Doug, you're not that bad a dancer". Dawn said."Believe me I've had worse, but you didn't take long in getting the steps".
That was nice to know, but I'm still no Fred Astaire. "All you need to know are the basics and you'll do fine.As the wedding gets closer, we'll make sure you can dance any kind of dance regardless of the music". To tell you the truth, I was becoming quite fond of Dawn and hoped she would be my only dancing partner at the reception.I felt comfortable when she was around.
We are spending a lot of time together, and I don't know if Dawn is seeing anyone, but I must build up the courage to ask, for I want her to be my date for the wedding.I have known Dawn for a long time, she was always at my house when my sister still lived there. We would always say hello, but often I thought of Dawn as a "sister"..... now that was beginning to change.
"Dawn, you have been a great teacher and I have enjoyed the lessons, but I don't have a date and I would like to know if......"
"Yes, yes, yes." I hadn't finished my question before Dawn answered and threw her arms around my neck.Pulling back just enough we looked into each others eyes. And with that I kissed her. What I'd noticed was she was not pulling back, she held on to me as I brushed her hair away from her face. The student had fallen for the teacher, and the teacher had fallen for the student.
My sister's wedding day and the reception is in full swing, Dawn has not left my side, and although my sister is beaming at her new husband, I caught a few glances forwards me as I know I made her proud by learning how to dance. Not only did the guy with the two left feet learned how to dance, he also won the heart of the teacher.Maybe there was a reason why I never learned to dance.
