Poetry: Poverty

by Donna Kroll

Haiti

There is a tropical paradise
Of great beauty, a rich history, and more
Where children eat dirt because they're hungry
Where babies curl up to sleep on the floor
And the majority of it's people
Are devastatingly poor.

YET-

These same people own spirits
That shine from their souls, clear to see
They let nothing defeat them
Not poverty, nor politics, nor the powers that be.
For they were the First to throw off slavery
They were the First to strive to be free.

It is the spirit of these brave people
It is their strength, heritage, and history
That will keep hope alive for the future
The people are the Hope of Haiti.
