The most frequent cause of divorce today is fairly obvious if you look back at the 50's and 60's. Our lifestyles have changed dramatically in just the past 50 years and along with those changes came a lot of stress.
As a senior citizen, I have known couples who have lived together for years and are still very happy together. Many of them will quickly tell you they believe getting married will destroy their relationship. Why?
Whether they admit it or not, married people usually end up taking each other for granted. Their lives merge into one. Their attitudes toward each other begin to change, believing the other is bound to them by finances, children, property and marriage. That is when they each begin to feel like business partners rather than life partners.
But I truly believe the most frequent cause of divorce today is hasty marriage. Being a retailer in a big marketplace for more than thirty years, I know a lot of people and most of the ones under thirty-five have been divorced at least once.
I've known most of them for years. Several of them would tell me they had met someone and not a year later, they were engaged to be married, ending in divorce soon after. It takes more than a few months to get to know someone.
Looking back, it's obvious how our society has changed. I believe young people are confused as to their role in the family unit. Years ago, husbands were typically the main providers and wives took care of the home.
But people live so extravagantly today that it takes more than one income to support even a small family. Stress mounts with the added responsibility of holding down a fulltime job and taking care of the home. The average wife during the 50's and 60's, worked mostly because she wanted to. But the average wife of today, works because she has to.
The only way this is going to change is if young people wise up and begin living within their means. They need to think more about the future than the present. The bible is God's instruction manual and in it is everything we need to know to live happy and fulfilled lives.
Nevertheless, the holy words of God are viewed as nonsense by the youth of today, as it was foretold; a long time ago with a warning for believers.
"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers... lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God... from such turn away." (2 Tim. 3)
