Having lifeless, dull hair is a real buzz-kill for those of us with busy social lives. Who wants to go out looking like someone dumped baby oil over their once curled locks? Answer: Nobody.
So how can you rev it up again to its former glory without a trip to the salon?
First, start with a good washing. Choose a shampoo and conditioner that is right for your hair type; for example, greasy hair that tends to come with a flaky scalp should be washed with a dandruff-defying shampoo. Head and Shoulders has come out with several different types all formulated to fight grease and dandruff, even while adding shine, or volume. If you have super dry hair, Herbal Essences offers moisturizing shampoos (if you're one of those people who buys hair care products according to smell, this is great for you).
When you condition, regardless of what the instructions say, let the conditioner sit and soak into your hair for at least 2 minutes before rinsing. This will allow the conditioner to have the maximum effect.
After shampooing, gently towel dry your hair. DO NOT rub vigorously, even if it is faster that way; this only damages and tangles the hair.
Now, if you're going to blow-dry your hair, this is a good time to add some sort of shine-enhancing, heat-protective, or volume-enhancing product (generally a mousse or serum- my personal favorites are by Bed Head). Distribute evenly through hair, from roots to ends.
Proceed with blow-drying. If you're looking for added volume, flip your head upside down and aim the dryer from the roots at the base of your neck, going out towards the ends. This will work best if you use your fingers to part through the hair and dry not only the hair at the nape, but also all over your scalp (still with your hair flipped over). This will give it a major boost.
Once the hair is dry, it's time to style it. A good base for any style, whether you are putting your hair up, leaving it down, curling it, or straightening it, is a thin (minimal) application of your favorite hair spray. Remember to allow the spray to dry completely before applying the curling iron or flat iron; you don't want to burn your hair.
Style as desired, and you're ready to party!
As a reminder: If your hair tends to fall flat halfway through the evening, tuck a travel-sized can of hair spray, and a fine toothed comb into your bag or purse. When the drooping begins, sneak into the ladies' room, lift the limp strands, and add a touch of spray to the roots. Then tease the under-side of the strand just a little to liven it up. Smooth hair, add a dash of spray for hold, and you're on your way in under 5 minutes.
