Top 5 Resources for Nonprofits

Starting and running a nonprofit is hard work. There's managaing, marketing, and policies. Not to mention the all-important task of fundraising. Whether you're in the beginning stages or your nonprofit is established, running a nonprofit can be as challenging as it is rewarding. Set yourself, and your charity, up for success with good preparation, education and knowledge. Take some of the guesswork out of the process with these five resources, all designed to help nonprofits do what they're meant to do: help people.

1. Grants.gov
Before any nonprofit can get off the ground it needs the funds to do so. Grants.gov guides nonprofits through the federal grant process by helping them find and apply for grants. It has a searchable database of the 26 federal grant-making agencies, putting over 1,000 grant programs and $500 billion in annual awards at your fingertips.

2. TechSoup.org
You run a nonprofit, all you want to do is make a difference, not wrestle with your PC or worry about online security. TechSoup.org is there to help you navigate the dicey waters of computers and software. Log in for information, support, and access to donated and discounted technology. Technology can increase your reach and productivity, and TechSoup.org can take the guesswork out of technology.

3. CraigslistFoundation.org
Craigslist.org calls itself a network of "people helping people" while the Craigslist Foundation is "helping people help". The foundation connects non-profits and supports their cause through education, resources and visibility. Access a selection of presentations, handouts, podcasts and session notes at Craigslist Foundation's Nonprofit Boot camp. Topics range from tax-exempt status and lobbying to the basics of starting a nonprofit.

4. BidFromtheHeart.com
It's a new way to get a great deal, plus raise money and awareness for your non-profit. This online auction site works like eBay, except that 25 percent of each bid fee goes to a charity (chosen by the buyer). Get your charity listed by sending information about your organization to info@bidfromtheheart.com.

5. Idealist.org
Perhaps the most comprehensive list of resources for nonprofits, Idealist.org compiles the best sites on the web for starting, managing and funding a nonprofit organization. Learn about topics like diversity in the workplace, management and recruitment. You can also read their blog, listen to podcasts, network and post resources you've found helpful.
