Marketing a Self-published Book

An author has just completed a self-published a book; the box (or boxes) of books is stored in the garage. A large quantity, first order was obviously a mistake; that is apparent to authors who have found themselves in this very position. If the author has not been accepted by a literary agent or book distributor, there are a few simple ways to get the book recognized and out on the market.

If the book has been published through an independent publisher, a Press Release may have been included in the package price. If not, create a one-page introduction to the book including: a scanned image of the book, a brief book summary, a short author bio, book excerpt, book specifications, and contact information. Send the press release to independent bookstores who are known for carrying local author books.

Another effective marking tool is to recruit family and friends to help get the word out. Email a Press Release to all the recipients listed in the author's address book.

Always donate a copy of the book to the local public library and mail one as a donation to other libraries in other cities where the author has resided. School libraries are also a good outlet to get the book noticed. However, make sure the content is age appropriate.

Independent book stores will generally stock a book from a local author; however, few purchase the book outright. Placing books in a store on a consignment basis is certainly acceptable and once the book has established a sales record, the store may be inclined to purchase additional copies. Don't be intimidated, negotiate the consignment percentage. Independent bookstores are also know to hold a book signing for a local author; inquire with the acquisitions department of the store.

Most well-known, national bookstore chains, including Hastings, will leave it up to the manager's discretion whether or not to carry local author books. The author should make an appointment with the appropriate employee and discuss this option. A Press Release and a copy of the book should be taken to the appointment.

The author should plan to attend book fairs. A booth can be rented or they may share the booth fee with another vendor. This is a great way to advertise and network with other authors. They may even be willing to share their marketing strategies.

Many web sites are dedicated to selling self-published books. Check the web site content to assure that the book will sell on the site. Also, pay close attention to the listing fee, contracts, monthly charges, royalties and etc. Determine if the book will sell the quantity required to make a profit after paying the fees.

Once the book is completed and a limited amount ordered, send a copy with a query letter to several independent presses. Presses with nationwide distribution and University presses will occasionally accept books directly from authors and small publishers. Read the Submission Guidelines carefully to assure the book meets their requirements.

Marketing a book will be an investment of time and money; however, costs can be cut considerably by the following the suggestions listed above.
