To say that the Bible is outdated and irrelevant is like saying that the principles of our Constitution are outdated and irrelevant. If someone disagrees with this it is because they are not Christians and detest the Word of God. The Bible, not only for Christians, has something to offer in many ways, both spiritually and morally. The teachings of Christ and Paul on the sanctity of marriage is an example of this. If everyone were to hold dear the teachings of the Bible and follow what they really say rather than interpreting them to meet their own values this world would be a different place.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians Ch. 4, verse 29) Is there not a valuable lesson we can learn from this? Paul wrote this in a letter to the Ephesians and though this is just one verse it is a strong representation of the kinds of points he was trying to get across. He goes on to talk about being kind and compassionate to one another.

There are many lessons we can learn from the Bible that if followed would change the mindset of our lives. The Bible, though written thousands of years ago, was not written specifically for the people in that time. We face the same moral and ethical struggles that people did back then. Things have obviously changed, sure, but people back then made bad decisions too such as; infidelity, murder, rape and there was still divorce. People were in struggling economies, there were homosexuals, there was war and there was hope. Jesus Christ was an inspiration, a symbol of hope that changed the shape of our world and continues to to this very day.

For someone to believe in the Bible is a completely different topic. I don't think that the Bible was written for a certain time period. I don't think God's concern for the world was whether our children watch too much television or whether we should look into different kinds of fossil fuels. His purpose was to spread the Word of Christ and to tell the story of His relationship with man leading up to the birth and death of Christ. The latter books were to explain to the beginning Christian churches the purpose of Christ and how to not only interpret his teachings but to apply them to their lives.

The Bible is perfect. All it requires is a little faith, reflection and prayer. Absorbing the Word into your life will change your life because you will find yourself with a newer concience, one that will speak to you in unique ways. The Bible can and should be applied to our lives today just as it will throughout the future.
