are two ways that you can lower your LDL number. This is by lifestyle changes or medication. More likely it is a combination of both of these. Lifestyle changes will include diet, physical activity and weight control. If your levels stay too high even after lifestyle changes, the physician may add medicine to bring your cholesterol levels down.
Examples of some of the cholesterol lowering medicines are:
Statins - these are the most commonly prescribed.
Ezetimbe - new class of cholesterol lowering drugs that interferes with the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
Bile acid resins - Usually prescribed along with a statin to further reduce LDL cholesterol levels.
Niacin - Lower total cholesterol, while raising HDL cholesterol
Fibrates - reduce triglycerides level by 20 to 50 percent, while increasing HDL by 10 to 15 percent
There are little things you can do when cooking foods. When you buy meat, cut off all the fat that you see. Use wine or fruit juice to baste with. When recipes call for eggs, use the egg whites and not the yolks. Use vegetable oil spray to saute' foods.
Following a healthy diet, losing weight, adding exercise can have a significant affect on your cholesterol levels. If the changes do not improve your numbers than medication will be added. There is no magic wand to lower cholesterol. It is your decision to make the necessary changes. It is also your decision to follow the advice of your doctor and take your medications as prescribed. Failing to make the necessary life changes and or medications for lowering cholesterol can cost you your life. The decision is totally yours.
