Caipirinhas are a delicious alcoholic beverage that is drunken at all times of day in Brazil. Stands on the street even sell this drink to people walking by. When I first tasted them they reminded me of a margarita but less salty and more refreshing. My friend thought they tasted like a non-mint mojito. Either way, during me trip to Rio De Janeiro I became addicted.
When I returned from Brazil, I had to figure out the best recipe for a homemade caparinha and I finally got it.
Jenna's best Caipirinha
This recipe serves four
Ingredients:
2 limes
2 tablespoons lime juice
16 teaspoons of sugar
16 ounces Cachacha (a light Brazilian rum that can be found in most liquor stores)
ice
Rinse the limes. Roll the limes under your palm to loosen the juice. Cut each lime into eight pieces and put four pieces in each of four glasses. Sprinkle one teaspoon of sugar on each piece and let sit for thirty seconds. With a pestol or mallet mash the lime pieces pulp side up. Add equal parts rum and lime juice, to each glass. Then fill the glass with ice. Enjoy!
Modifications
For fun you can add other fruits in place of or in addition to the lime. I had a strawberry lime caipirinah in a famous Rio bar and it was delicious. Kiwi and oranges make great additions as well. In place of Cachacha you can also use vodka.
