Chapbooks are an ideal way to publish a small collection of poetry or specialty cookbook in an inexpensive, yet lucrative way. These books are generally under 40 pages, may have a color or black and white cover, and are sewn, stapled, or spiral bound. An ISBN number is not necessary, although that decision would be up to the author's discretion.
The process begins with formatting approximately twenty of the author's favorite poems (or recipes) in Microsoft Word or other word processing program. Using a landscape orientation with an 8 1/2" X 11" paper size, two columns of text can easily fit onto the same page. Format the cover using the same page setup. The front cover would be created on the right side of the paper within the column margins and the back cover would appear on the left side of the paper within the column margins. This is a nice overall size when folded in half and there is no need for cutting. However, a smaller size would also be appropriate. The cover of a chapbook doesn't necessarily have to be computer generated. Many authors use a lightweight, leather cover or a plain, colored cover stock with glued on fabric, trim, photos and etc. This type of cover would only be used if a limited amount of chapbooks would be produced.
After the manuscript has been re-read to correct any errors and spell check used, the project should be ready to be printed. Print one side of the cover stock only for the front cover and back cover. Print both sides of the interior sheets. Pay particular attention if the pages have been numbered; pages in a chapbook do not necessarily have to be numbered. Depending on the home printer's capabilities and ink cost, it may wiser to print one copy and have additional copies made at a copy and print center. They will also be able to cut the book to size if necessary.
Once the project has been printed, lay the printed pages flat beginning with the cover; remember, the last page set will be the center pages of the book. Staple with a large commercial stapler with three staples evenly spaced, then fold the book in half. Set the book under a heavy object overnight to set the fold. Sewing the chapbook is also acceptable. Using a ruler, mark dots down the center of the paper to use as a sewing guide and sew with a heavy upholstery needle and thread. Continue with the instructions above. Some cowboy poets have used a light leather strip for binding giving the chapbook a country western look. Copy centers will generally have a binding service available also. They may use a lightweight spiral binding or comb binding that will not only work well for poetry chapbooks, but specialty cookbooks as well.
If the author is unable to format and assemble the book themselves, many small independent publishers will manufacture them for a minimal cost.
When it comes to marketing a chapbook, many national bookstore chains will not carry them as additions to their inventory. Public libraries and independent bookstores are the most likely target. Internet advertising and web site submissions can also be used for marketing purposes.
