For the last six years I've lived in the city of New york and have experienced the personal advantages of taking public transportation. I personally, never enjoyed taking a train or bus because I was use to getting driven everywhere in a car. However, being here has taught me more than I could ever have learned in a quiet suburb. I do not have a car and no one is going to drive me so public transportation is very important to me.
The biggest personal advantage of taking public transportation is knowing I do not have to do the driving. I do not have to watch the road. I'm an incredible nervous type of person and driving just brings this out more. When you drive, you have to have eyes in the back of your head. You have to watch the signs. When you let someone else do it for you, it takes the pressure of you.
I get to meet many different types of people when I take the train. Every time the train reaches a stop, thousands of people get on and off. The type of trains New York make you face many people. It is like being in a booth at a restaurant. You a have to look at some people for several stops. Besides the entertaining advertisements on the wall, there is nothing else to look accept the person's in front of you. You never know who you are going to meet. You could meet your future husband or wife.
You can eat on the run. When I take the bus or train, I have the freedom to eat. This is important when I have to go to work early. If I don't eat breakfast, it can be a disaster.
I love taking the express bus to Manhattan. This is my favorite type of public transportation. Why? This bus is like the one that takes you on long trips. The entire bus is rugged. The seats are very thick and there is storage space on the top and bottom of the bus. You could actually bring your suitcase on this type of bus. I've fell asleep many times to the sounds quiet. It is the most relaxing ride. This bus goes on the highway and brings you straight to the Big Apple.
Public transportation is a way for me to go long distances without spending a lot of money. For example, I could take the 2 train from where I live in the Bronx all the way through Manhattan to Brooklyn on $2. Brooklyn would be the last stop. It would take an hour and half to get there. Overall it is cheap. Taking a car there might cost more in gas money.
Overall, the personal advantages are wonderful. It makes life a little easier and that is something we all need.
