I believe public libraries will exist for many years to come. It is such a delicious feeling to be introduced to a new book, from its first page to the last. In today's economy, it is becoming cost prohibitive to purchase all the books one would like to read. Public libraries are a gift to society. Not only can a book be accessed, but it is a peaceful place in which to take the time to read and reflect.

One may argue that reading material can be found on the internet, or by listening to an electronic book. Part of reading, for me, is to be able to view the words, and to use my imagination to visualize what the characters look like. Beginning in elementary school, I have always been an avid reader. When I finish a book that I'm really into, I feel like I have lost a friend. When I visit the library to look for a particular book of interest, I'm appreciative of what libraries offer. Today, in the computer age, it is easier to look up the title or author, and access the book by myself.

Just as I was introduced to the public library by my mother, I have taken my children to the library. In turn, my daughter visits the public library with her children. My grandchildren began reading at a very early age, and derive so much enjoyment from reading books. When they leave the public library, they are armed with more books than they can carry. Their reading and writing skills have improved so much.

I haven't mentioned how helpful librarians are. They provide the personal touch that is hard to come by in the chain book stores. In today's society, a human being who offers help is rare. I still enjoy visiting book stores, and purchasing books, but I would be bereft if there were no more public libraries. I am hopeful that they will remain in the present for all readers to enjoy.

It is such a wonderful feeling to enter a public library, especially an old one. Although I visited the main public library in Manhattan when I was in sixth grade, to do research for a paper on Atomic Energy, the awe I felt there still remains with me. Living in a small town in New Jersey, its local library hadn't prepared me for this mega delight. I have had so many experiences since then in public and college libraries, but none has equalled that incredible experience.

I am hopeful that public libraries will continue to exist. Attention needs to be paid to libraries by donors, so that public libraries are there for future generations.
