Holiday Ladder Safety

Most accidents on ladders can be prevented. By themselves ladders are not very dangerous. It is when they are used improperly that accidents happen and some times even death.  It is estimated that at least 130, 000 injuries and 300 deaths a year are contributed to improper ladder usage.

Follow these guidelines and you and your family will have a safer holiday:

When hanging your Christmas lights or decorations choose the proper ladder for the job. Ladders are rated, pay close attention to these ratings. They give you valuable information, such as, weight restrictions and what types of jobs it can handle. Ratings are as follows:

• Type I Industrial: This ladder is Heavy-Duty and can support weight up to 250 pounds.

• Type II Commercial: This ladder is Medium-Duty and can support weight up to 225 pounds.

• Type III Household: This ladder is Light-Duty: It is mainly for jobs around the house. It can support weight up to 200 pounds.

Pay close attention to these ratings; all too often, weight requirements are ignored. Also the wrong ladder is chose to do the job. They are here for your safety.

Before you begin any job, inspect your ladder closely. Do not use a broken or damaged ladder.

• Fiberglass ladders: Check for cracks or splits. If you find any discontinue use. If you feel burs lightly sand and apply a coat of lacquer.

•  Wood ladders: Never paint your ladder this could hide defects. Use a clear lacquer or sealer. Inspect closely for rot, splinters, cracks, or broken rungs.  Check all hardware.

• Aluminum or steel ladders: Inspect for rough edges and burs. Check all screws and bolts; replace any that are missing or rusty. Inspect all welds and joints for cracks.

• On extension ladders: Inspect all ropes. Replace any that are worn or frayed.

Keep these simple rules in mind when working or decorating and you will have a safer Holiday. Too many people are seriously injured each year, because they forget these simple rules. You do not have to be one of them.

Make sure the ladder you use supports your weight. I can not stress this enough. Check the label attached to the ladder. If one is not present do not use this ladder.

Only one person at a time should be on a ladder. Ladders are not rated for more than one person.

The ladder you use should be the proper length. Your ladder should be at least three foot over your work area. NEVER use the top three rungs. It is too easy to get over balanced. Do not use two ladders tied together for an extension.

When doing a job around electricity use a wood or fiberglass ladder and not a metal ladder, to prevent electrical shock and or electrocution. Make sure to check where electrical lines are before you begin an outside job. At least 150 people are electrocuted each year because of ladders.

Inspect hinges to be sure they are not broken and that they are in proper working order. Check all locks and hinges to be sure they are properly locked. Accidents are often caused to hinges not properly locked.

Do not place a ladder in front of an unlocked or unguarded door. You do not want to be accidentally knocked off. Also be very careful when working around windows.

Check the surface under the ladder to be sure that it is level and on firm ground. Always use a solid surface.

When on a ladder never over stretch, it is too easy to get over balanced and have a serious fall. Get off the ladder and move it closer to the job.

Hope you have a safe and Happy Holiday Season!
