In order to determine the power and reach of television, as this global economy begins to take hold within the further reaches of the world, one need not look too far for proof.
It is an issue which is close to my heart. When I was four years old, in 1950, I watched an NBC series of documentaries about Hitler's rise to power, including how he used media to manipulate the decisions of the masses. At that time, my young mind thought, "if Hitler could use television (which was rather new to households, then), books, newspapers, and films to cause people to do such horrible things, just think how much America can accomplish if we use the media to make the world a better place, instead. It was, then, that I first thought that, someday, I wanted to do just that. It was during the days of Edward R. Murrow, so I my role model was excellent.
After a number of years of disappointment with the trusteeship of the free market media moguls, in 1990, I insisted that Congress and the FCC take action to minimize the quantity and severity of gratuitous violence on the airwaves, which they did. Unfortunately, however, they did nothing, at the time, to stem the rapid and extreme increase in mature/sexual content.
Today, we have a grandeloquent opportunity to raise the banner on behalf of the innocent children and trusting souls around an unsuspecting world. Each child has a right to his or her innocence. And each religious group has a right to have their most sacred beliefs respected within the media ...including reverence, itself.
We, each, need to "speak" loudly and cleary within our articles about the importance of creating international programming promoting The Golden Rule [the anti-thesis of which is the currently-popular Machiavellianism], the rights of the children to their innocence, and the sanctity of religious beliefs (whether or not everyone is a member of a particular religion).
The secular New World Order is making it increasingly difficult for people of faith to be comfortable within society. As such, a concerted effort is needed in order to provide all religions with sufficient safe "habitats" throughout the media.
For example: although I am a feminist and would not don a scarf on my head in order to visit Iraq, under ANY circumstances, I do respect the Muslim faith and Islam. As such, had I sufficient control, I would not allow any programming which showed women with bared heads on any Iraqi broadcast station...out of respect. People feel so strongly about their religious beliefs because they, desperately, do not want to go to "hell" or "hades", et caetera. As such, the place for a debate about such issues is not "in their faces"; rather, a news article, with an invitation to respond, might be sufficient to the debate.
Also, we need to request that the media giants create and/or distribute extensive education-oriented entertainment programming, books, et caetera, which respect the innocence of children, non-violence [especially against women and children], the religious rights of everyone, and peace on earth [The Golden Rule ...by the power of the inviolable Law of Cause and Effect].
Only then can the world reach it's true potential. There is 'GOLD' in those airwaves!
