Basic project tips for the freelance technical writer

ask to be paid on delivery of the project (after). If the project is a large one, such as a brand-new user guide and accompanying online help files, then it's recommended you negotiate being paid by milestone. For example you could be paid 1/4 of the total after submitting a draft of the user guide, 1/4 after the final copy of the user guide, 1/4 after the draft of the online help files, and the final 1/4 after the final delivery of the online help. This ensures that you're paid for your time even if the project scope changes, it the project deadline is changed, or if the project is eventually cancelled for whatever reason. Your time and skills are valuable, so make sure you get paid.

Finally, the most important tip to remember when planning out freelance technical writing projects is this: don't forget to ask for more work when you're finished. Networking is an important part of a freelancer's life, so once your project is finished, and you're satisfied with both the finished product, the payment you received, and the employer you worked for, don't hesitate to remind them you're available for other projects they might have as well. Even if they don't have any work right away, they'll remember your good work from this project, and will contact you in the future when they need a freelancer's services again.
