The United States has a moral and political leadership crisis that has stimulated the economic crisis. When so many greedy, vicious, two-faced people with the financial integrity of hermit crabs take power the interests of the nation are bound to decline. Toynbean cycles of civilization account for so much of the prevenient economic malaise. The same social traits of a successful civilization set in recurrently to drive the liberated from necessity toward mass economic ruin-yet their is still hope for change.
The United States post-cold war experienced a 5 billion soul increase in labor competition and production for all American workers. The rich exploited that for profit and started producing everything abroad expecting Americans to just become consumers without real earnings in order to increase the concentration of profits for the wealthiest. Americans were provided with new lower paying jobs that were not materially productive to keep them pacified. The Government of the United States borrowed money to keep the corrupt economic loop flowing as long as it could. Numerous corrupt business schemes and loan expansions developed. Cheaper Mexican immigrant workers were brought in to do non-outsourcable jobs for lower pay.
I noticed that I have a tent made in China and assembled in Bangladesh (by the cheapest workers on Earth). I suppose the Chinese make the nylon and zippers cheap but the Bangladeshis do the hand sewing labor even cheaper-this is the Wal-martization of the U.S. economy. Competition is fine yet the citizen-workers of a nation must look out for their own interests not through the obsolete straw man of 1930's style 'protectionism' but through rational democratic preservation of a leading national standard of living for all through the fielding of a cornucopia of intelligent new business infrastructure developments. While business can be free to do its own business as it chooses the United states Congress has the option of providing leadership on where and how it wants public monies spent to make the standard of living better for all Americans.
One of the problems with the post cold war political environment is the inability of the U.S. Congress to get anything done quickly an well to create ongoing opportunities for domestic employment of quality in transportation, housing, energy, education and so forth.
