Children, regardless of their age are still children. Yes they are given too much power over their teachers. Though these are simple statements they could not be any truer. Teachers are an important institution on how are children develops. Most would say that they are there only to instruct classroom material and to educate but in being educated one of the biggest lessons to be learned is to learn discipline. When we tie our teachers hands behind their back we are not only allowing our children to forego the lesson of discipline, but we are also giving them the opportunity to neglect their education. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /

There was a program in Oklahoma City called "The About Face Academy". This program was a public school that was designed for children in grades 6-8 who were known as trouble makers in their home schools. When a child in the Oklahoma City Public School system was kicked out for behavioral or performance issues the parents were given a choice; home school your child or stick them in a private school or send them to About Face Academy. This school was different than any other school in the city. While there were regular teachers there to teach curriculum, a staff of drill instructors monitored the school and exercised rule over the children. The results were phenomenal. The school was designed to be a 9 week program and when the student completed their nine week they would return to their home school on probation. Then the drill instructors would do spot checks on the students randomly at their home schools to make sure they were doing good. The school, in the late nineties, had over a 90% success rate.

In the average American household it is true that families only spend 4-6 waking hours together. With that being said children on average spend no less than 8 hours per day at school. While they are at school they are under the direct authority of teachers and school administrators. That being said, why are we allowing our children to run rampid in our schools? This is a major problem and for most public school systems teachers are getting tired of dealing with children who obstruct the learning process. Yet their hands are tied and there is often times nothing that they can do. They are held to strict standards such as no cursing, no yelling and limited on what they can do for discipline. How is a teacher supposed to establish their authority in the classroom when they have to call an administrator
