There is little as welcoming as coming inside a warm and cozy home from the freezing winter weather, and smelling the enchanting smells of scented candles and seeing their ambient glow. Though candles are popular during all four seasons, the winter months bring out the candle lover in all of us. Many enjoy using candles as a way to beautify their current holiday decorations. As enticing as they are, one should be certain they are using candles wisely and minimizing the risk of open flame in their home.

During Thanksgiving and Christmas, many delight in their upscale table centerpieces and use candles to create a calm and romantic atmosphere. When placing candles on tables for decoration, be aware of what materials are in the vicinity. If you are using tablecloths, you can help reduce the risk of open flames simply by using decorative plates or mirrors under any lit candles. Be aware of what chemicals, fabrics, and other possible hazards are used on centerpieces. Using candles wisely around fabric is extremely important. Avoid placing candles directly underneath centerpieces. Allow several inches of space between the flames and any decorations located on your table.

Many enjoy the curb appeal that lit candles offer when placed in a home's window. Using candles wisely in this setting is challenging if not impossible. If you decide to light candles in your windows, be sure to use a sturdy candle-holder to avoid the candle being knocked over. Make certain that any curtains are pulled open wide, and any blinds are completely pulled up. Take extra precaution and make sure that the cords are also securely out of the way. There is great risk when dealing with an open flame, so be certain that you are in the area that the candles are lit at all times. One key element in using candles wisely is always supervising them when they are lit.

Many feel that the danger of lit candles in windows overrides the beautiful appearance. These people avoid the risk of open flames completely by using fake candles. These are typically battery or electrically run candle sticks that have light bulbs in place of real flames. These can safely be tucked into your windows and allow you to have the warm glow you desire, without the risks.

Candles are routinely simply placed all around the house to help fill it with delicious scents and to bring about a relaxing atmosphere. When you become accustomed to lighting the same candles, in the same locations, time and time again; you may become less diligent in avoiding your risk of open flames. Even commonly used candles need to be used wisely.

Simple things like keeping all papers and fabrics away from any candle, no matter how large or small, can greatly reduce your risk of causing a fire due to open flames. If you have small children in your home, be aware of candle placement. Are you certain your toddler cannot reach it?

When placing candles on counter tops in kitchens and bathrooms, make sure there is ample space between the open flame and any above cabinetry. Checking for smoke and tar stains on any surfaces above candles, and feeling them for warmth and heat, can help you determine if there is too much of a risk to have an open flame in that area.

Using candles is a cheap and easy way to help add beauty and warmth to any home. When used wisely, candles can warm up your windows, light a dark corner, and even help make bathrooms and mudrooms smell fresh and inviting. With a little precaution, candles can safely be used and enjoyed all year long.
