Getting your driver's license is one of the most important milestones in your life; all of a sudden you can go wherever you want without having to rely on friends and family for a ride. It's extremely gratifying to pass the road test because it's a validation of all your hours of practicing and hard work, but as with other important things in life, it's not as easy as it looks.
The very first thing to consider is that you need to feel comfortable behind the wheel. If you're comfortable, you'll be confident and a confident driver always drives better than a terrified driver. If as you drive, you're digging finger holes into the steering wheel from squeezing it so hard, it may be a sign that you need to spend more time practicing. It is possible to be very nervous behind the wheel and yet feel confident about other aspects of driving such as turning and parking. Recognizing that you may need more practice will save you time and heartache later on. It's helpful to take a few professional driving lessons because the instructor can teach you proper driving techniques and theory. An instructor can also answer all of your driving related questions and tell you what to expect on the day of the road test.
On the day of the road test, you need to be as calm as possible. Make sure you have all of the required documents; you will most likely spend a lot of time waiting and once it's your turn, you don't want to be sent away because you forgot your permit. Try to schedule the test on a day when you won't have other pressing engagements such as work or school; this will help you clear your mind and be focused on the test.
Once you're in the car, the road test examiner will want to see:
- That you put your seat belt on
- That you adjust the seat if needed
- That you adjust your mirrors as needed
Then they will ask you to start the ignition and pull out of the space. They will want to see:
- That you signal and turn your head to look before pulling out of the space
- That you hold the steering wheel correctly with both hands; one at the 10o'clock position and the other hand at the 2 o'clock position
- That you have good control in terms of acceleration and stopping
They will usually let you drive for a few seconds and then they will start directing you. They may tell you to make a turn or to parallel park behind a certain car. They will want to see:
- That you signal at every turn at an appropriate time- even to stop to parallel park
- That you check your mirrors before you stop
- That
