There are several free programs available that can assist you in getting rid of spyware and adware. I recommend using more than one program to be thorough. Here are what I consider to be three of the most effective. All of them are free downloads.

1. The program that I have found the most useful is Spybot Search & Destroy, which can be downloaded from http://www.spybot.info/en/down load/index.html . It's easy to use and is quite effective.

2. Another useful program is Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, which can be downloaded from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/pro ducts/ad-aware_se_personal.php . This program is also easy to use and sometimes catches problems that Spybot Search & Destroy missed.

3. Grisoft, the maker of a great free anti-virus program (AVG), recently released an anti-spyware program, which can be downloaded from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20 /lng/us/tpl/v5 . I've only been using it for a couple of weeks, but it seems like a very useful anti-spyware tool. I've been impressed with it so far.

One thing to keep in mind with all of these programs is the importance of downloading available updates frequently. This is quite important because new threats appear all the time. Some programs will update automatically, but others require you to do it. It's usually a very simple process-you just have to remember to do it.
