Management tips employees would give their bosses

Dear Boss,

I'm really glad you hired me and I want to stay here until I retire. It's no fun looking for a new job and that is really the last thing I want to do. I know it's tough for you to find good help these days too, so if we work together on the following items I will stay here and be a loyal hard working employee for you as long as you need me.

1- SHOW ME YOU CARE- I'm a human being first, a worker second. I like my job but I love my family. Ask me how they are doing once in a while and show GENUINE interest in what happens in my life. If you care about me, I will care about my job and it will show in my effort. If you don't show any interest in me I will work just hard enough to get by. Not exactly a formula for your success.

2- LISTEN TO ME- Blank stares, no eye contact and interruptions only indicate that you have no interest in what I have to say. If that is my perception, I will stop talking to you. That hurts you because I might have an idea or two that could help the operation. In the end, that idea could make you look good. I also could alert you to a potential problem that could blow up in your face if left unchecked. Being approachable keeps you in the loop and helps you do your job better. It just makes sense.

3- ASK ME WHAT I THINK- I have my fingers in the job all day long. My mind is constantly thinking of ways to improve things. If you don't ask me what's on my mind, you may never hear what could be a great improvement. Nothing motivates me more than being asked my opinion. It says you respect me and care about my thoughts. When I'm motivated, my self esteem rises and my level of production rises right along with it. Just another example of how I can ultimately make you look good.

4- HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE- I try hard to follow the rules and do what I am told. When I mess up, I expect to be held accountable. I don't like it, but I know it is necessary. What frustrates me though, is when others get away with things for no reason. When that occurs, it saps my motivation and causes me to lose respect for you. I realize that most situations are not black and white and that you do not owe me an explanation for your actions. But when you clearly play favorites it makes me question if this is the place I want to be.

Someday I hope to be a boss, too and I want to be able to use you as a role model. If you show me you care about me, listen to what I have to say and be consistent in your management style, I will be the best employee you could possibly want or need.
