Mary:
A Christmas Story
Older Mary: Should be a woman of 40 or more years
Young Mary: can be a girl of 16 to a woman of 25
Joseph: Can be a young man of 16 to 25
John: A young boy helping his Grandmother, Age should be 8-12
Shepherds: 6 guys any age. 1 and 2 should look old enough to be able to deliver there lines seriously
Gabriel: Should have a big booming voice
Angels: Should be evenly balanced of Male and Female
Inn Keeper: Older man with gray hair and beard
Lights fall on right center stage there is a old woman dressed in colorful robes sitting on a wooden bench she looks slightly sad yet she is smiling
Mary: John! (calling) John? Where are you?
John: Here I am Grandmother (John enters stage. He should be dressed in plain brown robes). What is it?
Mary: Nothing really just an old woman wishing to talk to her Grandson. Do you know what time of year it is? (She pulls out a crib and smiles as if remembering)
John: Yes Grandmother I know. (Sighs heavily) do you miss him?
Mary: (sighs) Yes I miss him. But then I remember that while I lost a son I gained a Savior (smiles and looks towards the back of the room), I remember that day when it all started it was right after your father Joseph asked my father to marry me. (sighs happily. Lights fade and go to center of stage)
Gabriel is just a light from the back that has a big booming voice. Young Mary should be dressed simply in a blue or white robe.
Young Mary: (singing or humming "This is the Day")
Gabriel: (Gently and softly) Mary?
Mary: (Mary looks up) who is there? (Questioningly) Hello?
Gabriel: (Loud but cheerfully) Hail! Thou who are highly favored with the Lord! (Mary falls to her knees and covers her face with her hands) (The angel softens his voice) Fear not Mary, and behold you shall conceive a son (gets louder again) and shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest: The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David: and he will rule over the house of Jacob for ever and of his Kingdom there will be no end.
Mary: (wondering) how can this be? I have never known a man.
Gabriel: (No doubt in his voice. It should be strong and firm) The Holy Ghost will come over you, and the power of the highest shall over shadow thee: The child that you will bear will be called the Son of God. (Joyfully) Also your cousin Elisabeth she is also bearing a child and this is the sixth month for her that was called barren. For with God NOTHING is Impossible!
