"I had never been through anything like it before," said Laurie, an artist and one of the students at the New Age retreat. "Yet, I knew somehow I was not dreaming. I was not having any type of vision. It was real. My friend, dead for three years, was there, talking to me. Telling me he was fine, telling me not to worry. I could hear him. I could touch him, feel his shirt. However, it was the middle of the night when I knew, logically, I should be sleeping in my own bed."

"Your physical body was still in your bed," replied the lecturer, a California student of parapsychology. "Yet, your spiritual body had gone out of the physical so that you could communicate with your deceased friend while your physical body slept."

"But my friend is dead, has been dead for so long," Laurie protested. "How can it be? Although I know it did happen I still don't understand how it happened."

"Your spiritual body does not have the same limitations of the physical being," claimed the speaker. "Even with that there are still many who refuse to recognize the power of the astral shape, although we all have one. Others have been through similar situations but have managed to convince themselves later that it was just a vivid dream. Or, even when they know this is not the case, they may keep quiet about such an experience for fear of condemnation or even because they are afraid of what they don't themselves understand."

"I know what you mean," a man in the audience, who introduced himself as a farmer, interrupted. "Last April I was confined to bed because of a bad back injury. It was hard because spring is my favorite time of year. I had a hired hand helping out of course, so not getting my work done wasn't the real problem. Mostly, I just yearned to do more than watch through the blamed window as the flowers budded and bloomed. Then one day, while I thought I was sleeping, I actually saw myself get up and walk toward the bedroom door. I turned back to see my own body still lying, asleep, in bed. I wondered too then if I was dreaming, but it all just felt too real for that. And in a few minutes, as I went out of the bedroom and continued outside, I could feel the morning damp grass beneath my bare feet. That's when I knew for sure that whatever was happening was definitely real. Yet, when I tried to tell my family later about the incident they, along with my doctor, blamed it all on a hallucination brought on by the pain medication. They were so danged insistent that they were right that
