Our bedroom is not just a place to sleep, but our only refuge from the noise of the kids, the constant phone calls from relatives and the housework that beckons us every day. As a true sanctuary in our busy lives, the bedroom must speak to our senses and create a place of solitude, harmony and peace.
There are simple things that you can do to create a sanctuary in your bedroom.
First, take a picture of your bedroom and bring it with you when shopping. If you cannot commit to new paint and bedding, keep your existing color scheme in mind.
Move away from bold, vibrant shades to more muted, neutral tones. Think of the elements of nature such as the calming combination of blues and greens that signify water and vegetation. Plants strategically placed around the room are an easy way to incorporate greenery. Greys and whites, the color of rocks and stones, are also soothing. Neutrals, like tan, are easy to combine with existing furniture and bedding. Stay within the shades of one particular color for the larger elements of your room to create harmony.
If you are overwhelmed by color choices, find images of nature that calm you and take those with you to home decor stores or paint stores. You can also search the web for sites that allow you to digitally "paint" a picture of your room before you purchase anything.
Purge your bedroom of mismatched pieces and clutter. If your budget doesn't allow for new furniture, try painting your furniture all the same color. Small pillows and accent pieces can reintroduce color without overpowering the room.
Pick textures for your bed that are soothing. Throws can add an element of luxury to bedding without the expense. Try velvet or fleece materials to add warmth. You may wish to splurge on luscious silk sheets or extra-soft cotton sheets. Embossed fabrics can also be quite tantalizing.
Invest in good pillows to soothe your neck and back after a long day. Several pillows of various shapes and sizes will create a luxurious look and feel to your bed. Pillows placed at your neck, back, knees and ankles support your tired joints. Don't be afraid to experiment with color and texture on pillows as well. Splashes of red, orange, deep blue or deep green enhance natural tones.
Next, think of the sounds of peace and tranquility. For some of us, this means absolute quiet. For others, it may mean the gentle bubble of water or rhythm of classical music. Buy a small fountain for your nightstand or dresser, or visit a local music store for "at the spa" compact discs.
Choose candles or infusers that introduce the scent of lavender, vanilla, ginger, lemon, chamomile or sandalwood into your bedroom. These scents have been proven to reduce tension and enhance relaxation.
Provide plenty of opportunity for a variety of sensory experiences and your bedroom will transform into a safe harbour from everything you wish to leave behind, if only momentarily.
