The trial and death of Socrates

a piece of paper labeled guilty, or not guilty into an urn. He was found guilty in a vote that numbered 220 to 280. His punishment was left up to him and he offered the sarcastic recommendation that he be rewarded for his actions. He proposed that he be fined a modest sum of money. Faced with two decisions, the jury sentenced him to death.

While incarcerated, Socrates chose to commit suicide by drinking poison. The doctor who administered the poison instructed Socrates to walk around until his legs felt heavy. When this started happening the doctor laid Socrates down and pinched his foot, where it was found that he had no feeling. This numbness slowly made its way to Socrates' heart, and upon his death bed he made his last statement: "Crito, we owe a Cock to Asclepius. Please don't forget to pay the debt." It is thought that this quote was meant to say to Crito, that death is the cure.

Generally speaking, Socrates was morally, intellectually, and politically at odds with his fellow Athenians. He believed in the immortality of the soul and that the gods had appointed him as a divine emissary. He questioned Athenian democracy and condemned their moral beliefs. He is a definitive contribution to history and the founder of Western Philosopy.
