As a Chicago native I know first hand the windy cold that gives the Windy City its name. Air so cold it brings tears to your eyes and it hurts to smile. But even with the temperatures there is a magic about Chicago in the winter that shouldn't be missed. This is even more true during the holiday season.
Bundle up and check out Macy's store windows on State Street. Each year the windows progress through a children's store complete with moving parts, lights that blink and corresponding music. So many people press to be near the windows to catch a glimpse that you won't feel the cold as acutely.
After looking at the windows make sure to stop inside the store. Go to the Walnut room, even if you don't want to pay to eat there, just a glimpse of the huge Christmas tree that rises several floors is worth the trip and will allow you to warm up. Also in the makeup department on the first floor there is often a snow/light show. It's magical to watch.
Ice skating in the city is a must. You can rent skates at Millennium Park and Grant Park. At night with the lights, music and city in the background skating is especially memorable. Plus while in Millennium Park make sure to stop by the infamous bean'! It'll give you a perspective of the city you've never seen before.
Stroll the Magnificent Mile. With the numerous retailers along Michigan Mile there is plenty of window shopping to do. Stores take special pride in their window displays this time of the year. Plus along the way are a number of hotels and coffee shops that will give you the chance to warm up and get a steaming cup of hot chocolate. If hungry for a Chicago-style meal while you're out try the Billy Goat. Located on lower Wacker just under 430 N. Michigan (take the steps outside Walgreens down to the lower level).
While not strictly a winter thing, many of the museums in Chicago have a free or discount day. Shedd Aquarium is discounted on Mondays and Tuesdays during the winter months. The Art Institute of Chicago is free on Tuesdays. The Field Museum is free on Wednesdays and the Museum of Science and Industry is all yours on Thursdays. For a complete list check here.
Year long Daley Plaza has local a number of bazaars and farmer's markets. Through the month of December the plaza hosts the Christkindlmarket, a traditional German holiday market. Buy trinkets for friends and stocking stuffers and try authentic foods like brats and goulash.
Also during the holidays you can catch the Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker performance. An early afternoon performance is perfect for the family, or try an evening show with your loved one.
