Bible study: The book of Ephesians

by Alice Whitaker

Created on: December 10, 2008

There were thirteen letters penned by the Apostle, Paul. The book of Ephesians is not a book at all but a rather lengthy letter. It was Paul's custom to extend personal greetings when writing to the various churches. In the letter to the Ephesians, Paul departed from his usual custom, which was odd considering he had spent an extensive period of time in Ephesus. Scholars believe that this letter was not intended only for the church of Ephesus but the for the seven churches mentioned in Revelations (Revelations 1:11) which were located in the region. Ephesus was the largest of the churches. Paul was given the task of working with the Gentiles and a majority of the Christian Gentiles was in this region. The basic theme of this letter is GOD's plan to bring all people, no matter what their nation of origin together. All people are one and should reflect this in their interaction with each other. (Ephesians 1:1-14) Paul was touched by the faith and love of the Ephesian Christians and tells them that he gives thanks for them and always prays that they have wisdom and incite into GOD's mysteries and secrets. (Ephesians 1: 15-23) He further explains that GOD has given them a new life in Christ and made them a part of His new creation. All who belong to Christ have a bond that goes beyond race, religion or cultural backgrounds. (Ephesians 2:1-22) In Ephesians 3:1-13, Paul explains in detail his mission. Before Christ came, GOD's promises had largely been directed to the Jews. He explained how GOD's secret plan had been revealed to him and he was commissioned to take the message of salvation to the Gentiles. Paul once again tells the Ephesians that he prays urgently that GOD's love fill their hearts. (Ephesians 3:14-21) Ephesians 4:1-16 explains that everyone is bound together. Christ is the body and the believers are the branches or limbs. All are given particular talents that must be used for the common good. Salvation is a gift and the price to obtain it is to copy GOD's character. (Ephesians 4:17-20) As Paul states, the practices or dark side of the heathen cannot be followed.

Paul speaks of Christian relationships in Ephesians 5: 21-6:9 and particularly focuses on the treatment of husbands and wives toward each other. He also gives advice on raising the children in the family. Telling the Ephesians that it is not an easy task to live a Christian life concludes the letter. It is a constant struggle due to so many external factors. It is a spiritual struggle, therefore he recommends putting on the armor of GOD. (Ephesians 6:10-24) Although, Paul's letter to the Ephesians was written centuries ago, the information that he imparts is as timely today as it was at that time.
