It is the dream of many high school baseball players to receive a college scholarship and take there game to the next level. When it comes down to being offered a baseball scholarship it ultimately comes down to your ability, but there are several steps one can take to improve their chances of getting a scholarship.
The most important thing a high school player can do in regards to pursuing a scholarship is to be persistent when getting your name out to college coaches. This can be done in a variety of ways. The most common way is to attend college skill camps or showcases. Almost every college coache uses these camps as a form of recruiting talent for the upcoming season. Another way to achieve this goal is to make a highlight tape of your high school games and send it to colleges that you are interested in. This is a good way to give a coach an opportunity to see you in action that may not see you otherwise. Include with your tape a letter, academic interest, and a stat sheet containing all of your high school statistics.
It is also very important to work along with your high school coach when it comes to the scholarship process. They are one of your best resources when it comes to contacting college coaches and in turn will be the one that coaches will contact about your ability. By keeping them informed about your college search, it will give them a better opportunity to help you reach your objective.
Once you have received contact from college coaches about the possibility of playing for their program, it is time to narrow them down to your top choices. After making your selections it is now time to arrange a campus visit. Your campus visit should be conducted with the baseball coach so that it is more personal then just a general tour. During the visit you will find out from the coach what he may be offering you in terms of a scholarship as well as what he expects from you. After visiting all of your top choices it is then time to make a decision. When making the decision of what university to attend it is important to weigh out not only the scholarship offers but also if there is the opportunity for the scholarship to increase, potential playing time, and the academics offered at the school.
By being persistent when contacting college coaches and involving your high school coach in the scholarship process, you are giving yourself a leg up on the competition.
